How to Make the Perfect Salad: Pear, Rocket, Fennel, and Blue Cheese Salad

What makes a perfect salad? I think it should hit all the tastebud areas on your tongue. Below is a tongue map (image from James Beard Foundation). To make a perfect salad, pick ingredients that include all these tastes. And then make sure every forkful includes them!

This salad from Donna Hay's Modern Classics Book 1 has elements to hit every tastebud:
  • Bitter: rocket (arugula) and fennel
  • Sour: balsamic vinegar
  • Salty: blue cheese
  • Sweet: pears

This delicious salad was the perfect lunch for me. I am so happy that I tried it as part of the Wednesdays with Donna Hay blogger group. Visit the others to see if they liked the salad: Margaret from Tea and Scones, Gaye from Laws of the Kitchen, Kayte from Grandma's Kitchen Table, and Chaya from Bizzy Bakes.

There you go - I hadn't thought about it that way at all. I in fact skipped the rocket because I don't like its bitterness. I really liked this salad too.

Hi Shelley, I would say these are my favourites, too. But then again, I'm a veggie-hugger. Maybe all vegetables are my favourites. (I just had a weird mental image of a salad with my arms around it.)
I have to say, I like the amount of cheese you put in this salad :)

Haha, Pech! Cheese lovers, unite!
Looks great...love the map of the taste sensations. This recipe did a great job of hitting those sensations. I have to learn how to cut fennel better, truly, it's time I learned. Yours is so nicely done!

Seems easy, I'll try to cook it.
